Morris Folk Club

Morris Folk Club

The Morris Folk Club runs on the last Tuesday of most months (excepting December and some other holiday months). Entry is free, and all are warmly welcome.

Morris Folk Club runs 7.30pm-10.30pm-ish.

Check Twitter and Facebook for information on what's happening this month, not least in case of cancellations or special themes, or sign up to the Morris emailing list.

Our Folk Club runs from 7.30pm till about 10.30pm, and generally follows an open, floor performers/singers night format. You can just listen, and sing along, if you like, or you can perform. Let the MC know if you'd like to sing or play something - it's typically up to one item per half, time permitting. It's always a very appreciative audience - and, if you're worried about that kind of thing (which you shouldn't be), a supportive and forgiving one too.

A unique part of Morris Folk Club is that it incorporates elements of 'open choir rehearsal', when anyone can get a taste of singing with the choir, as during the evening we all together learn a song or two or go over an old favourite.

Carter Sampson + Banjo Jen

Black Cat Music are delighted to present..... Carter Sampson live at the Betsey Trotwood plus support from Banjo Jen.

Tickets here: www.wegottickets.com

Carter Sampson is an Oklahoma born singer/songwriter with a big voice.

The Oklahoma City-based artist is blessed by a musical family legacy that includes talents like Roy Orbison.

Her journey as a naturally independent, free-spirited musician has seemed almost predestined at times. At age 15 she began experimenting with sound as a way to pass the time; now her creativity has matured into the dedicated and passionate performance that makes her a favorite female vocalist.

“I’m pretty much the same me working on the same goals … maybe a little more grown up. I think I am more confident than I was when I first started playing. I’ve always been brave, but I’m more sure of myself now,” Sampson exuded.

As a relatable artist, her empowering music appeals to a wide range of folks, who are incredibly and admirably loyal to her and her work. She’s the founder and director of Oklahoma City’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls, which always partners with nonprofit organizations that empower girls and women through music education.

The inspiring artist also averages about 220 shows annually – in areas like Oklahoma and Arkansas, as well as Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. But as the self-penned ‘Queen of Oklahoma,’ Sampson’s red boots are happiest when they’re on her home turf.

“I am proud to be from Oklahoma and really proud of the music that is coming out of the state right now. I wish we were more progressive in a lot of areas, but it feels like slowly change is happening.”

Please note this show will take place in the basement area and is predominently standing.

Evangeline Gentle

Black Cat Music is dleighted to bring to the iconic Betsey Trotwood - Evangline Gentile.

Tickets here: www.wegottickets.com

Evangeline Gentle is a Scottish-Canadian internationally acclaimed folk-pop songwriter, performer and vocalist based in Ontario, Canada. Contemplative and affecting, Evangeline’s lyrics evoke lush emotional landscapes within the listener and seek to unite audiences with a sense of “sameness”.

A celebration of queerness and queer culture is woven throughout Gentle’s upcoming release Where The Diamonds Are, best heard on singles “Gay Bar” which debuted on CBC q, and “Bad Girls”. On this she says “While many have never been to a gay bar, most know the euphoria of getting dressed up to go out dancing with friends. We are inextricably connected by our shared emotional, human experience. I love that songs remind us of this.”

Support from the wonderful Banjo Jen and Ella Spencer so get there early

Please note the gig is in the basement.

Dan Stuart + Tom Heyman

Decor & Clerkenville East-West present Green On Red legend Dan Stuart and Tom Heyman. An intimate evening of music in the company of two master songwriters.

Tickets here: www.wegottickets.com

Dan Stuart returns to the UK to perform songs from across his solo and Green On Red catalogue. Dan is a musician and author, living in Tucson, Arizona, who was the leader of Green On Red, a band associated with LA's Paisley Underground of the 1980s and the beginning of the so called Americana/ alt.country movement. His comeback solo record in 2012 had the same title as his 2014 false memoir: The Deliverance of Marlowe Billings. After moving to Oaxaca, Dan recorded the follow up, Marlowe's Revenge, with Mexico City's premier garage/surf rockers Twin Tones. The Marlowe trilogy concluded with 2018's acclaimed The Unfortunate Demise of Marlowe Billings, awarded Americana album of the month in Uncut magazine.
https://marlowebillings.com/

Tom Heyman
US singer songwriter Tom Heyman (formerly of Philly's Go To Blazes) will be presenting his new concept record “24th Street Blues”, about the endangered culture and living ghosts of San Francisco's Mission District. Heyman's intention was to create a sound that combined the loose, late night, low down groove of JJ Cale with the bittersweet melancholia of late period Nick Lowe and the melodic storytelling of his hero Gordon Lightfoot. The record was written mostly at night, after long bar shifts, and is an examination of the loneliness and alienation of a city in flux, and the true cost of love. Heyman has spent years performing with Hiss Golden Messenger, Chuck Prophet, Alejandro Escovedo, John Doe, and a host of others.

Hawk (The Plastic Pals, SWE), Michael J Sheehy + Trent Miller

Doors: 8:15 pm

Admission: 10 pounds (at the door)

Hawk of Stockholm New York rock / garage power pop twin guitar guitar slinger band The Plastic Pals returning to London for a solo acoustic gig at the glorious quirky pub the Betsey Trotwood where he´s played several times before, with and without the band. Even namedropping the Betsey and the Farringdon / Clerkenwell stomping grounds and the Come Down And Meet The Folks posse in the tune Clerkenwell (from the album Psychic Reader, 2018). That one plus some Plastic Pals classics together with a few new ones will be on the menu this Wednesday evening at the Betsey.

Hawk is also very happy to announce guest appearances of his friends Michael J Sheehy and Trent Miller, playing a set each before Hawk kicks off his show.

Michael J Sheehy, vocalist and founding member of Dream City Film Club, currently in Miraculous Mule and psychedelic electronic duo United Sounds, but also an eminent solo artist, singer and songwriter himself, who Hawk had the pleasure of seeing perform opening for Chris Cacavas at the Ginistry in Oxted and at the Green Note in Camden in August last year. By his own account, Michael J Sheehy has pissed away two or three careers. As wonderful singer/songwriter Dan Raza writes about Sheehy as an introduction to his interview with him on Raza´s awesome podcast Spirit&Roots (see that as a recommendation), Michael´s music is "... dark and often darkly humorous, punk-spirited songs..." that draw on "... everything from early American rock´n´roll, blues, gospel and country to the British hymnal tradition".

Trent Miller, the angelic diabolic Italian bard who relocated to London many years ago. Enchanting songwriter with haunting melodies and lyrics evocative of Gene Clark, Townes Van Zandt and Leonard Cohen. "A darkly underground mix of hangovers, anguished love, mournful blues and lonesome country" as Q Magazine wrote about his album "Time Between Us".

You´re in for a treat, folks!
